Plumber, Lead

DUTIES:

  • Provides a full range of plumbing services to the embassy and all satellite sites under the direction of the Deputy Project manager including installation and repair of pipes, fittings, fixtures and drainage systems
  • Provides supervision, leadership, oversight and associated responsibilities
  • Assembles, installs and repairs pipes, fittings, and fixtures of heating, water and drainage systems according to specifications and plumbing codes
  • Assembles, installs, maintains and repairs pipes, fittings, insulation, valves and associated items for HVAC hot and chilled water piping systems including welding as required
  • Inspects structures to ascertain obstructions to be avoided to prevent weakening the structure resulting from pipe installation
  • Locates and marks pipe and connection position and passage holes for pipes in walls and floors using ruler, spirit level, and plumb bob
  • Uses hand and power tools to cut openings in walls and floors to accommodate pipe and pipe fittings; uses a pipe cutter, and pipe-threading machine to cut and thread pipes
  • Assembles and installs valves, pipe fittings , and pipes made from metals or non-metals; joins pipe using screws, bolts, flanges, fittings, solder, plastic solvent; tests pipe systems with water or air and reads pressure gauges to ensure system is not leaking
  • Installs and repairs plumbing fixtures, sinks, commodes, bathtubs, water heaters, hot water tanks, garbage disposal units, dishwashers and water softeners
  • Repairs and maintains plumbing by replacing washers, mending leaking pipes and opening clogged drains
  • Maintains pool equipment including: sand filters, pumps and accessory equipment, chemical feed pumps, tubing and control system
  • Studies building plans and working drawings to determine required work tools equipment and sequence of installation
  • Maintains effective, timely, and respectful communication and interaction with other employees, supervisors and supports other organizations
  • Performs other administrative tasks including material ordering, inventory, work scheduling and report preparation
  • General supervisory duties and responsibilities
  • Performs other duties as assigned

REQUIRED:

  • Citizenship: Must be eligible for US Government Clearance.
  • Security Clearance: Must have or be able to obtain an active Secret security clearance and maintain clearance eligibility throughout the duration of the contract
  • Two to five years supervisory experience in overseas assignments
  • Five years journeyman plumbing / pipe fitter experience
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards of the plumbing trade and related safety precautions and considerable skill required for the installation, maintenance and repair of plumbing systems, equipment and HVAC piping systems
  • Able to proactively analyze a situation and to make frequent technical decisions based on specifications, plumbing codes and accepted trade practices
  • Previous supervisory experience in an OCONUS environment with a multi-national workforce is desirable
  • Ability to collect, analyze and summarize data and prepare daily reports and work orders
  • Must have good organizational and communication skills and the ability to exercise sound judgment and make decisions independently
  • Previous work experience in an austere OCONUS environment preferred

Education:

  • Completion of an Apprentice program with a Journeyman Certificate, or have an AA/ AS degree in plumbing from a two year college and / or equivalent field experience is strongly preferred
  • High school diploma or GED required

Language Requirement:

  • Must be fluent in speaking, reading and writing English
  • Must have excellent oral and written communication skills sufficient to effectively communicate with employees, management and the client

Passport, Licenses and Certifications:

  • As part of pre-contingency requirements, by the time the visa process starts, candidates must possess a valid passport of home country with a minimum of 18 months remaining to expiration date with 8 blank pages.
  • Licensed Journeyman Plumber is required
  • Welding Certification is preferred

WORKING AND LIVING CONDITIONS:

This position may be located in a war zone, in an environment with harsh and dangerous working and living conditions. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may regularly be exposed to extreme and austere desert-like environment. Temperatures can reach 120- 130 degrees Fahrenheit/50-55 degrees Celsius during the summer months. Employees must be willing and able to perform regular job requirements in this austere, extreme environment, as well as willing and able to deploy to Iraq for extended periods. Work schedules are a minimum of 6 days per week and 10 hours per day, while some jobs have higher daily and weekly minimums. Employees must be willing and able to perform physical activities including, but not limited to, heavy lifting and moving of items, parts, assemblies, and equipment up to the safety regulation maximum; climbing in and out of equipment; crawling; and working outdoors. This includes being able to lift and carry 40 pounds of personal protective equipment for extended periods of time and being capable of running and ‘duck & cover’ during emergencies without putting oneself or others at risk.
