Job Description

The New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY) is seeking a Community Coordinator to join the Reuse team within the Bureau of Recycling and Sustainability. Reporting to Senior Management with varying degrees of latitude for independent initiative, judgment, and decision making, the successful candidate will perform professional, complex, and responsible program management, field operations work, outreach, and community engagement on Department sustainable waste management programs and initiatives including:

  • Overseeing the contract to launch and execute reuse events in every City Council District.
  • Coordinate with contractor for all planning, compliance, reporting, and invoicing.
  • Support the contractor in scheduling and securing appropriate space to ensure reuse swap events are accessible to all New Yorkers
  • Coordinated development of informational materials and public education strategies aimed at promoting the reuse events
  • Manage information gathering, workflow processes, and communications pertaining to reuse events; gathering and analyzing related data regularly.
  • Research, evaluate, and make recommendations on program implementation and operational planning.
  • Prepare comprehensive reports and presentations on the status of programs and the results of research studies.
  • Serve as Department and inter-governmental liaison for external reuse events.
  • Support for other Bureau functions as needed.

This is a position that will require the successful candidate to work evenings and weekends, as relevant to the event schedule.

Minimum Qual Requirements

1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or

2. High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or

3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to “1” or “2” above. However, all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in “1” above.

Preferred Skills

  • Extensive knowledge of New York City’s reuse sector.
  • Experience with donations management and coordination.
  • Experience administering programs connecting the public and private sectors.
  • Experience developing programs enabling New York City agencies to comply with laws and policies.
  • Strong communications skills; ability to tailor complex messages to diverse audiences.
  • Strong administrative, organizational, interpersonal, writing, and data management skills.
  • Proficiency in use of word processing and data management applications including MS Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint, as well as basic customer relationship management platforms.
  • In addition to English, fluency in a foreign language including, but not limited to: Spanish, Chinese, Russian, Korean, Haitian Creole, Arabic, Bengali, Hindi, Urdu, and Hebrew.
  • Knowledge of New York City and comfortable commuting across the City by vehicle and public transportation.
  • Able to work evenings and weekends as appropriate.
  • Possession of a New York State Motor Vehicle Driver’s License.
