Required

  • Awareness of the Private Sponsorship of Refugees Program and current refugee issues
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills required: reading, writing and analytical skills equal to a college or university degree
  • Experience and facility with public speaking on migration, resettlement, refugee and related issues
  • Ability to relate well with a wide range of people and be comfortable in communication with MCCO constituency
  • Patience and constructive critical thinking and communication, especially when dealing with government and bureaucracy
  • Diplomacy skills – able to say no to groups without alienating them (i.e. when presenting non-priority cases)
  • Willingness to work with sensitivity within a diverse cultural and theological milieu required
  • Ability to mediate challenges that arise amongst program participants from a variety of different faith based, ethno-cultural, and socio-economic backgrounds.
  • Experience in developing and implementing tools and resources for various audiences
  • Familiarity with the settlement and integration process and relevant community resources
  • Ability to work independently and prioritize a wide variety of tasks required
  • Strong organizational skills with good attention to detail
  • Free to travel domestically, especially within Ontario
  • Ability to work non-standard hours required, including evenings and weekends
  • Respect for and discretion in dealing with confidential material required
  • Willing to work within and promote MCCO’s dismantling oppression goals
  • Police check will be required once hired
  • Must be able to legally work in Canada

Preferred

  • Experience with Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, Power Point) and Lotus Notes an asset
  • Fluency in one or more of other languages such as Swahili, Arabic, Spanish, Tigrinya, Amharic

Job Synopsis
This is salaried .6 FTE contract position with MCC Ontario (MCCO) Migration and Resettlement Program related to the Private Sponsorship of Refugees (PSR). The Associate will work within the refugee program to: 1) facilitate the social inclusion of newcomers, 2) engage youth and young adults and 3) monitor and evaluate the settlement and integration of newcomers and 4) assist with administrative and other duties as required. The position is based in the MCCO office in Kitchener.

Challenges

Key Responsibilities
Social Inclusion of Newcomers

In collaboration with sponsoring groups, plan and implement the following: –

  • Provide orientation to newcomers to ensure they understand their roles, responsibilities and rights in Canada.
  • Engage newcomers in activities that facilitate community engagement and connection to social networks
  • Involve newcomers in organizing events in the community
  • Invite new comers to neighbourhood block parties and engage long standing Canadian of the same origin to visit and explain what the event is about and what is expected of their participation.
  • implement a matching program to connect newcomer children with settled Canadians to offer opportunities for cross-cultural exchange and friendships to be formed
  • Engage newcomers in Advocacy as opportunities as they become available

Engagement of Youth and Young Adults (YYA)

  • Plan, design, set up and execute initiatives to engage YYA in the Refugee Program
  • Provide settled Canadian YYA Adults with opportunities for social connections (social bridges, social bonds and social links) with newcomer YYA
  • Organize sessions to provide Newcomers YYA with information, skills and knowledge to help them adapt, settle and integrate into Canadian life.

Monitoring and Evaluation of Newcomers Settlement (Named and BVOR)

  • In consultation with the CG Lead, connect with newcomers to plan and implement a focused check in throughout the sponsorship year.
  • Track check-ins to assess settlement outcomes.
  • Host quarterly online check-in with newcomers across the province.
  • Plan events that bring newcomers and sponsors to create networking opportunities by connecting groups to each other to share experience/learn from each other.

Other

  • Participate in MCCO orientations, provincial meetings, and annual meeting
  • Participate in a local faith community, being willing to use his/her personal gifts within this community and model nonviolent peacemaking through respectful interaction with others
  • Maintain a high level of integrity, reflecting Christian respect and Christ’s unconditional love to those with whom you work, including colleagues, partner agencies, the homeless and marginalized
  • Answer inquiries about MCC from constituency and general public; communicate MCC’s values, articulating the importance of MCC’s criteria for workers, all of whom serve as representatives of the Mennonite and Be in Christ churches which support MCC
  • Model nonviolent peacemaking through respectful daily interactions with staff and the public
