The British Embassy Baghdad currently has a vacancy for a HVAC Technician Assistant and Handyperson, job grade S1
The HVAC Assistant & Handyman supports HVAC technicians in installing, repairing, and maintaining heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems. Additionally, the role involves general handyman tasks such as basic plumbing, carpentry, painting, electrical repairs, masonry works, gardening, welding, and general facility maintenance. This role ensures a safe, functional, and comfortable environment for all building occupants.
Duties and responsibilities:
HVAC Support Duties
Installation Support: Assist HVAC technicians during installation of HVAC systems, including split units, portable/window ACs, and chillers. Help with lifting, mounting, and positioning units, as well as sealing and connecting refrigerant lines.
- Electrical Connections Assistance: Support wiring of AC units, including connecting thermostats, sensors, and control boards under supervision. Ensure connections follow proper safety guidelines.
- Planned Preventive Maintenance (PPM): Carry out basic PPM tasks such as cleaning or replacing filters, clearing condensers and coils, and lubricating mechanical parts to support system efficiency.
- Refrigerant Handling Support: Assist in checking and refilling refrigerant levels as directed. Observe safety procedures when dealing with pressurized systems.
- Component Replacement Help technicians in replacing worn-out components like fans, motors, belts, and filters, ensuring proper fitment and testing afterward.
- Troubleshooting Assistance Assist in identifying system faults such as unusual noises, leaks, or electrical malfunctions. Provide support with diagnostic tools and leak detectors.
- Ductwork Support Help with installation, repair, and sealing of ductwork to ensure proper airflow and thermal efficiency throughout buildings.
- Safety and Compliance Follow all health and safety protocols including use of PPE, proper handling of HVAC materials, and adherence to Technical Works Group (TWG) /British Embassy Baghdad (BEB) procedures.
- Other Duties Perform additional HVAC-related or general support tasks as assigned by supervisors or TWG management.
Handyperson Duties:
- Trades Support: Assist various tradesmen (plumbers, electricians, carpenters, masons, etc.) with their daily tasks as directed by the supervisor, providing general support across multiple maintenance areas.
- Basic Plumbing Repairs: Perform minor plumbing tasks including fixing leaks, unclogging drains, and replacing plumbing fixtures under supervision.
- Basic Electrical Repairs Carry out simple electrical maintenance such as changing light bulbs, switches, and sockets to support electrical trades.
- Carpentry Work Execute basic carpentry tasks such as door adjustments, shelving installation, and furniture repairs.
- Painting and Patching: Paint walls, ceilings, and surfaces and perform minor patching to maintain building aesthetics.
- Masonry Assistance: Prepare tools and assist masons with basic masonry tasks to facilitate smooth workflow.
- General Building Maintenance : Support maintenance activities such as flooring repairs, window fixes, and moving furniture as needed.
The above list is not exhaustive, and the jobholder will be required to be flexible as specific responsibilities could change in the future, and this would be at the discretion of the line manager and Senior Management. The job description may be reviewed to meet changes in business needs. The jobholder may also take on other ad hoc tasks as and when required, including participating in the Embassy’s emergency planning and any response to a crisis.

Eligibility:

- We can obtain the appropriate level of local and UK security clearance for you; and
- You have (or be willing to obtain) the right to live and work in Iraq. Candidate”s residence permit and work permit, and the expense to obtain them, will be their own responsibility – the Embassy does not provide residence or work permits. Essential qualifications, skills and experience
Qualifications, skills, and experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent (required).
- Minimum 1-2 years of experience in HVAC systems.
- Good knowledge of HVAC systems. Additionally have the familiarity with basic HVAC components and systems.
- Proven experience in basics of plumbing, carpentry, painting, or electrical work.
- Good understanding of HVAC tools and safety practices.
- Physical ability to lift heavy equipment, climb ladders, and work in confined spaces.
- Good problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
- Strong attention to detail and time management.
- Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
- Customer-service oriented with good communication skills.
- Valid Full drivers licence
- Willingness to attend training or certification programs.
Desirable qualifications, skills and experience
- Technical certification or diploma in HVAC systems or electrical systems
- Relevant certification in HVAC or air-conditioning and any other technical certification

Working hours and remuneration:
The Embassy aims to offer an attractive working environment and remuneration package for this role, including up to 21 days of annual leave (calculated pro-rata).
The role grade is S1 with a base salary of US $ 1,422 per month. This base salary is paid 13 times a year. In addition, the role attracts a security allowance payable as part of this package. This security allowance is subject to review and may be altered or withdrawn at any time.
No accommodation nor relocation expenses are payable in connection with this position.
This position is for a full-time employment on a permanent contract basis. Employment is also subject to a 90-day probationary period.
Conditioned working hours are 38 hours per week. Normal working hours are Sunday to Wednesday from 08:00 to 16:00 and Thursday from 08:00-14:00. The jobholder will be required to be flexible in their approach to hours worked as these will be dictated by operational needs and may involve working out of hours (evenings/ weekends/ holidays) and emergency on call hours.
The jobholder will have work performed both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions. They will be exposed to dust, noise, and hazardous materials (with PPE provided). This job will require overtime, weekend, or emergency call-out work.
