Job Description
The New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY) is seeking a Community Coordinator to join the Customer Service team within the Bureau of Recycling and Sustainability. Reporting to Senior Management with varying degrees of latitude for independent initiative, judgment, and decision making, the successful candidate will perform professional, complex, and responsible customer service, outreach, and community engagement on Department sustainable waste management programs and initiatives including:
- Managing online tools, workflow processes, and communications pertaining to composting; gathering and analyzing related data regularly.
- Overseeing inventory and versions of informational materials, online tools, and public education collateral promoting zero waste in New York City.
- Plan, implement and manage procedures to maintain and optimize inventory control
- Researching, evaluating, and making recommendations on program implementation and operational planning.
- Preparing comprehensive reports and presentations on the status of programs and customer service.
- Serving as Department liaison with contracted vendors and the public.
- Coordinating within the Department and with other City Agencies to plan for and trouble-shoot donations management during disaster.
- Developing contacts within City government and with other recycling and waste management professionals.
- Support other Bureau functions as needed. May require occasional evening or weekend work.
Minimum Qual Requirements
1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or
2. High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or
3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to “1” or “2” above. However, all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in “1” above.
Preferred Skills
- Knowledge of composting and recycling in New York City
- Experience in print piece inventory management
- Experience developing programs enabling New York City agencies to comply with laws and policies.
- Strong communications skills; ability to tailor complex messages to diverse audiences.
- Strong administrative, organizational, interpersonal, writing, and data management skills.
- Proficiency in use of word processing and data management applications including MS Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint, as well as basic customer relationship management platforms.
- In addition to English, fluency in a foreign language including, but not limited to: Spanish, Chinese, Russian, Korean, Haitian Creole, Arabic, Bengali, Hindi, Urdu, and Hebrew.
- Possession of a New York State Motor Vehicle Driver’s License.
