Job Description (Roles and Responsibilities)
The British Embassy Baghdad currently has a vacancy for two (2) Handypersons, job grade S3, on a fixed-term contract of two (2) years.
We are looking for two skilled and reliable handypersons to support day-to-day maintenance activities and assist various trades (e.g., electricians, plumbers, carpenters, painters). The ideal candidates must be hands-on, a fast learner, and able to think independently to help resolve issues on site. A strong work ethic, flexibility, and problem-solving ability are essential for success in this role.
Duties and responsibilities:
- Support to Skilled Trades: Assist various tradespeople—including electricians, plumbers, HVAC technicians, carpenters, painters, masons, and gardeners—in performing repair, installation, and maintenance tasks across the facility. Provide hands-on help during routine and emergency maintenance activities to ensure smooth workflow and task completion.
- Minor Repairs and Maintenance: Independently carry out minor repair tasks such as fixing door handles, performing basic plumbing repairs (e.g., addressing small leaks), replacing faulty lighting, and conducting painting touch-ups. Escalate complex issues to appropriate trades as needed.
- Tool and Material Handling: Safely operate hand and power tools required for various maintenance jobs. Load, unload, and transport tools, materials, and equipment to and from work sites to support tradespeople and optimize productivity.
- Site Preparation and Cleanliness: Maintain cleanliness and organization of work areas during and after tasks. Dispose of waste materials properly and ensure tools and equipment are returned to their designated locations.
- Maintenance Task Support: Assist during preventive and corrective maintenance activities by preparing materials, dismantling and assembling components, and following directions from supervisors or lead technicians.
- Work Order Response: Respond promptly to assigned work orders, service requests, or emergency calls. Coordinate with relevant teams to complete tasks in a timely and efficient manner.
- Health and Safety Compliance: Follow all health and safety regulations, including the correct use of PPE. Identify potential hazards, report unsafe conditions, and contribute to maintaining a safe working environment.
- Additional Duties: Demonstrate flexibility by supporting different departments based on workload and operational needs. Perform any other duties assigned by supervisors or management.
The above list is not exhaustive, and the jobholder will be required to be flexible as specific responsibilities could change in the future, and this would be at the discretion of the line manager and Senior Management. The job description may be reviewed to meet changes in business needs. The jobholder may also take on other ad hoc tasks as and when required, including participating in the Embassy’s emergency planning and any response to a crisis.

Eligibility:

- You have (or be willing to obtain) the right to live and work in Iraq. Candidate”s residence permit and work permit, and the expense to obtain them, will be their own responsibility – the Embassy does not provide residence or work permits. Essential qualifications, skills and experience
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum 1 years of experience in facility or building maintenance.
- Physical ability to lift heavy equipment, climb ladders, and work in confined spaces.
- Good problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
- Strong attention to detail and time management.
- Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
- Valid Full drivers licence
- Willingness to attend training or certification programs.
Desirable qualifications, skills and experience
- Relevant certification in any technical aspect
- Vocational training in maintenance or a related field

Working hours and remuneration:
The Embassy aims to offer an attractive working environment and remuneration package for this role, including up to 21 days of annual leave (calculated pro-rata).
The role grade is S3 with a base salary of US$ 1,039 per month. This base salary is paid 13 times a year. In addition, the role attracts a security allowance payable as part of this package. This security allowance is subject to review and may be altered or withdrawn at any time.
No accommodation nor relocation expenses are payable in connection with this position.
This position is for a full-time employment on a fixed term contract of 2 years. Employment is also subject to a 90-day probationary period.
Conditioned working hours are 38 hours per week. Normal working hours are Sunday to Wednesday from 08:00 to 16:00 and Thursday from 08:00-14:00. The jobholder will be required to be flexible in their approach to hours worked as these will be dictated by operational needs and may involve working out of hours (evenings/ weekends/ holidays) or emergency on call hours.
The jobholder may have to work both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions, they may be exposed to noise, dust and hazardous material for which PPE will be provided.
The Embassy encourages a culture of continuous learning. Training will be given in the role. All employees have access to the Civil Service Learning platform, which gives access to training to improve job specific skills. Employees are entitled to a minimum number of annual training days.
