FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT

The Arabic Program in the Department of Classical & Oriental Studies (https://hunter.cuny.edu/artsci/classical-and-oriental-studies/arabic-studies/) at Hunter College of The City University of New York invites applications for a position at the rank of Lecturer in Arabic. This is a full-time appointment beginning in the Fall 2025 semester with a renewable contract and eligibility for a Certificate of Continuous Service. The teaching load is four courses per semester.

Responsibilities: Performs teaching and related faculty functions in area(s) of expertise including, but not limited to, course development, student placement and exemption testing, student advising, coordinating Arabic peer tutoring, and organizing student activities.

Faculty duties include teaching Arabic language courses at all levels from beginner to advanced (first-seventh semester), including Hunter College’s Heritage Learner classes. Also must be prepared to teach advanced Arabic courses in Arab History and Culture, Qur’anic Arabic, History of the Arabic Language, and Egyptian Arabic.

QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Bachelor’s degree in any field, but must have relevant Arabic language classroom experience. Master’s degree strongly preferred.
  2. Native or near-native competence in Arabic and English.
  3. At least six years of experience and demonstrated success teaching Arabic as a second language to diverse students at the university level using the “Al-Kitaab” series..

COMPENSATION

Salary commensurate with academic accomplishments and experience within the range of title (Lect.: $79,174-$86,721).
