Public Services Supervisor

The Position

The Position

This is a new position with the opportunity to lead a team of dedicated library staff. This position will be based at and supervises staff who work at the Main library and will oversee reference service points and programming across both the Main Library and the Murray Scholls branch, serving patrons of all ages. As a member of the library’s leadership team, this position will lead library-wide committees and initiatives as well.

The Team

The Public Services Team is responsible for patron experience from getting a library card for the first time to learning a new skill in the Makerspace, and all the steps in-between. This newly formed team is charged with providing and iterating services collaboratively and with the patron at the center of our decisions and the work we do.

This is an exempt, Management 2 classified position. This position requires evening and weekend hours. The classification of this position is Library Supervisor. There is one vacancy, but candidates are encouraged to also apply to the Library Supervisor opening with the Materials team, if interested.

Responsibilities

Depending upon assignment, the incumbent may perform a combination of some or all of the following duties:

Supervise the day-to-day operations of Public Services (Reference) and Library Programming. Develop, review, approve and implement team goals, services, policies, and procedures. Set performance standards. Serve as a member of both the Public Services Leadership Team, and the Library-wide Leadership Team. Evaluate performance and program effectiveness using statistics, reports, and other measurement tools. Take action for improvement as necessary.

Supervise staff to ensure city goals and objectives are met. Schedule, assign and review work of direct reports and staff working in assigned operations area. Make hiring decisions for assigned staff and participate in hiring decisions for other staff. Conduct performance planning and developmental dialogues with employees. Respond to employee grievances and oversee disciplinary processes according to the collective bargaining agreement and city policy.

Assist in preparing and monitoring team budget. Authorize purchases and payments for team supplies, equipment and contracted services.

Oversee operations at reference public service and programming service points. Model expertise in all functions of these services.

Develop plans, timelines and resource allocations for assigned projects. Monitor progress to ensure objectives are met. Evaluate results.

Oversee & establish operational processes including procedure development and implementation; provide input and support into development of library services and processes.

Develop and implement training for staff. Ensure best training practices, making sure required staff technical competencies are met.

Be a technology champion. Maintain knowledge of current and emerging technology tools and trends; provides instructions to library users on library technology services. Train and guide others on technology tools and services.

Promote public awareness of library services and programs. Develop partnerships and collaborate with individuals and organizations within the community. Evaluate effectiveness of collaborative efforts.

Create a workplace that promotes the organizational values of workplace diversity, equity and inclusion.

Assist in creating a positive and supportive work environment with a culture of teamwork and communication.

Actively promote an environment respectful of living and working in a multicultural society.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Masters’ degree in Library Science from an American Library Association approved program.

Three years’ of experience in a supervisory or lead role with library experience preferred.

Or an equivalent combination of education and experience enabling the incumbent to perform the essential functions of the position.

Ability to pass reference checks, a degree verification check and satisfy the requirements of a background check.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Supervisory experience in a library

Bilingual in one of the City of Beaverton’s priority languages (Spanish, Arabic, Korean, Vietnamese, Chinese, Russian, or Japanese).

Experience building new teams and collaborating across work groups.

Customer service experience from other industries.

Compensation

Wage Range: $5145.45 – $6895.42 monthly

Wage rate will be determined depending on relevant work experience as outlined in the Equal Pay Act. The city pays the full retirement contribution to PERS; provides employees with an opportunity to participate in a deferred compensation retirement plan; makes available a public service loan forgiveness program and tuition reimbursement program; and offers excellent health, dental, vision and life insurance coverage.
