Your opportunity:
The Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy proudly offers 14 teaching programs in a variety of areas of global expertise. As part of the University of Toronto, we are home to exceptional faculty, experts, and researchers from around the globe, and over 40 academic centres, labs, and programs. Our goal is to build a unique, world-renowned research, teaching, and public engagement centre that shapes the new field of global affairs from Canada. Our School unifies those who are passionate about global affairs to discuss the problems of a fast-changing world.

The Munk School is recruiting a full-time Research Officer to work with projects at the University of Toronto associated with the International Centre for Tax and Development (ICTD), including the Local Government Revenue Initiative (LoGRI). The role will involve providing research and knowledge mobilization assistance to LoGRI and ICTD more broadly. ICTD is a global policy research network devoted to improving tax policy and administration, with a specific regional focus on sub-Saharan Africa and an overall focus on low- and middle-income countries. Based at the Munk School, LoGRI is an initiative of ICTD with a mandate to develop policy-relevant research, knowledge, expertise, and tools to support local governments in lower-income countries. LoGRI will also work directly with government partners to successfully implement innovative reform strategies informed by research.

The role will be based primarily in Toronto, but will involve substantial overseas travel, primarily in Africa

Your responsibilities will include:
Drafting summaries of research project results

Conducting systematic literature reviews

Preparing draft statistical reports and summaries from data collected

Implementing and executing qualitative and/or quantitative research methods

Analyzing results and preparing statistical reports for research papers

+Essential Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree in a social science field, including political science, sociology, public policy and economics, or an acceptable combination of equivalent experience.

Minimum two years providing support to research-focused tax, development, and/or informal economy in a country in Africa, ideally in one of ICTD’s priority countries (e.g., Nigeria, Ethiopia, Rwanda, Uganda, Sierra Leone, Senegal, Morocco, and Egypt).

Experience writing and editing papers, policy briefs, blogs, and other written reports related to tax research in Africa.

Experience working in a low or middle-income country, ideally including engagement with policymakers, civil society and/or public administration.

Experience fostering positive relationships with project partners.

Experience maintaining information on the websites and on social media sites.

Experience planning event logistics.

Significant knowledge of tax and development issues in Africa.

Excellent verbal and written English communication.

Fluent in French with professional proficiency in written and oral French.

Ability to work well autonomously with minimal supervision, and flexibility to manage multiple and changing priorities.

Strong attention to detail and the ability to collaborate with people from all cultures, across time zones, in a virtual team environment.

Assets (Nonessential):
A Master’s degree is an asset.

Knowledge of other languages widely spoken in Africa (preferably Arabic) is an asset.

Experience working with a non-profit organization or a civil society organization is an asset.

Pay Scale Group & Hiring Zone:
USW Pay Band 09 – $58,824 with an annual step progression to a maximum of $75,227. Pay scale and job class assignment is subject to determination pursuant to the Job Evaluation/Pay Equity Maintenance Protocol.
