Description: RESTORE Advocate & Education Specialist (Crisis Advocate) Monroe County

In support of Planned Parenthood of Central and Western New York (PPCWNY)’s mission, the Crisis Advocate provides crisis intervention, short-term counseling, advocacy and referral services in Monroe County. Their secondary focus will be the supervision and coordination of the RESTORE Volunteer program in Monroe, Genesee, Livingston, Orleans and Wyoming Counties.

Essential Functions

Crisis Intervention and Advocacy

Provides crisis intervention and short-term counseling to primary and secondary victims of sexual assault and domestic violence in person and/or by telephone

Provides personal and criminal justice advocacy and accompaniment for victims and significant others during hospital/health center procedures, police and/or court proceedings, family court proceedings, student conduct hearings, K-12 schools and colleges, and correctional facilities

Provides referral information and support to clients, other professionals and appropriate community agencies

Volunteer Coordination

Jointly works with the Volunteer Program Manager to source, screen and select potential RESTORE volunteers

Participates with the RESTORE regional staff to plan, present and evaluate annual training programs for new RESTORE volunteers; schedules and/or assists with continuing education programs for existing volunteers and attend debriefings/in-service meetings

Develops and maintains scheduling for volunteer hotline coverage, which ensures crisis intervention services is available 24/7

Provides on-going feedback to volunteers regarding performance and write annual performance review

Collaborates with Volunteer Programs Manager on annual volunteer recognition events

Program Development and Delivery

Involves professionals from organizations such as criminal justice, law enforcement, medicine, victim advocacy, education and human services to make certain there will be consistent collaboration between organizations, thus ensuring an effective and sensitive community response to the victims of sexual assault and domestic violence

Works with the regional RESTORE team to write regular revisions/updates to all county specific training materials (hospital evidence protocols, volunteer training curricula and manuals, community resources and professional referral lists)

Shows respect to all internal and external customers for differences in backgrounds, lifestyles, viewpoints and needs in areas such as race, gender, ethnicity, creed, sexual orientation and others

Other Accountability Activities

Participates in community events (i.e., health fairs, school and college presentations, community organizations, etc.) as needed

Ensures proper documentation is written for client records, annual and donor reports according to assigned dates

Is aware of annual goals and objectives of the organization and participate in their attainment by focusing on the education and counseling needs of our clients and patients

Develops and presents in-service programs to other PPCWNY staff, as needed

Participates in affiliate initiatives

Works collaboratively with Supervisor to obtain and review monthly, quarterly and yearly data from RESTORE programs and prepare for submission to RESTORE donors

Signs up for On Call shifts at a minimum of two shifts per month including one weeknight and one weekend 24-hour shift on rotating basis with all staff, including holidays

Performs other duties as assigned by Supervisor

. Requirements: Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in human services, social work, health education or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience

Minimum two years of experience in human services/crisis counseling field

Must be very organized, have the ability to work with changing priorities and simultaneously handle multiple priorities

Collaborative and interpersonal skills are essential to perform effectively in various team environments

Ability to develop and maintain positive relationships with individuals, families and staff at all levels is critical

Knowledge of community-based organizations is a plus

Well-developed advocacy skills and a commitment to being victim-focused while working with collaborative disciplines is essential

Superior communication skills (verbal and written) is essential

Must be able to work a flexible schedule including some evenings and weekends, holidays, provide 24-hour coverage and travel within the region

Must have reliable transportation and a valid NYS driver’s license not in jeopardy of being revoked

Work ScheduleThis is a full-time position; regular schedule will be 40 hours per week. Some evening and weekend duties, as well as on call responsibilities.CompensationPer the collective bargaining unit, this position starts at $17.32/hour
