The Pathways to Education Program™ is a national program operating in 21 communities across Canada and provides a comprehensive set of academic, social, financial, and individual supports to youth. The Vancouver program location is part of a place-based collective impact initiative, the Our Place Graduation Strategy. The Surrey program location holds strong partnerships with the local schools and school districts to deliver the program.
Position Summary:
The Youth Outreach Worker is responsible for providing individualized case management and group programming facilitation to support youth succeed both academically and socially. This position involves developing relationships with youth and liaising with family members, school personnel, and community staff to support the educational needs of youth. In addition, Youth Outreach Workers will support the after-school tutoring and mentoring programming based in the community. The successful candidate will be dynamic, skilled and experienced in connecting with diverse communities, including Aboriginal, newcomer, and LGBTQ youth, to ensure they feel safe, supported, and connected. This position reports to the Program Supervisor of the Pathways Surrey Program.
PRIMARY DUTIES:
1) 1 to 1 Case Management:
Develop plans in collaboration with youth and appropriate adults (i.e. Parents, guardians, teachers & other school staff, community partners) to address the educational needs/goals of individual youth
Monitor and support youth progress, engagement and participation in the program and liaise with program staff
Engage with families and facilitate their involvement in the educational goals and plans for youth in the program
Provide advocacy and support to assist youth access information and support services
2) Develop supportive and engaging relationships with youth:
Work with youth to identify goals, strengths, issues and students concerns while supporting their participation in tutoring, mentoring, school and community activities
3) Support the design, development, and facilitation of tutoring and mentoring:
Develop diverse resources that address specific learning styles, abilities and needs
Support youth to fully engage in tutoring and mentoring program
Provide support and mentorship to volunteers to engage with youth with effective tutoring and mentoring techniques
Dimensions of Work
The primary interface is direct with youth, volunteers and colleagues in the Pathways program
Direct reporting relationship to Program Supervisor
Coordination and sharing information with the relevant program, school, families and community staff
Work Conditions
Hours – early afternoon into the evening and occasional weekends (regular workdays may include 11-7 PM, 12-8 PM).
Flexibility is required as there may be a need for earlier or later hours depending upon circumstances to offer support to youth at key times.
Travel between multiple sites in the designated community
Academic and Job Experience Required:
Post-secondary degree in education, Social Work, Psychology, or Child and Youth Care diploma. Plus two years’ experience working with diverse youth populations, or a combination of related education and work experience with youth.
Basic Requirements:
Criminal records check including the vulnerable sector
Standard first aid and CPR (training provided if needed)
Use of own vehicle with reimbursement
Clean driver’s abstract
Desired Requirements:
Experience working with youth and families in Strathcona, DTES and Chinatown
Experience providing 1-to-1 case management in an educational context
Experience working in programs supporting the educational success for youth in this community
Experience and/or knowledge of working with the public school system (grade 7 -12)
Specific training and/or experience with youth with special needs or new language learners
Experience working with and guiding volunteers
Experience facilitation of groups
Knowledge of community and social services
Understanding of the impact of racism and oppression
Understanding of the impact of settlement journey
