The Pathways to Education Program is a national program operating in 21 communities across Canada and provides a comprehensive set of academic, social, financial, and individual supports to youth. The Vancouver program location holds strong partnerships with the local schools and school districts to deliver the program.

Position Summary:
The Academic Program Facilitator (APF) is responsible for ensuring the tutoring programming space at Pathways is safe, accessible and supportive to youth participants, volunteers, guests and staff. The tutoring space is held at several locations in Strathcona/ DTES, with anywhere from 10 – 100 youth participants and 2 – 15 volunteers at any given time. This position may also be part of facilitating online tutoring and mentoring spaces.

The APF ensures tutoring is happening in ways that support youth with various learning styles and needs, including youth who may have barriers to learning and IEP’s. Alongside this, the APF maintains a welcoming space that is grounded in community, collaboration, anti-oppressive and equity-based philosophies.

This position requires afternoon and evening hours predominately, with some daytime hours. The Pathways program runs all year long, and hours also vary throughout the year as the needs of the program shift.

Primary Duties:
1)Youth engagement

Welcome youth into the tutoring space

Maintain and develop inclusive programming practices that allow personal, social, and educational growth to help youth reach their full potential while also fostering group cohesion

Develop diverse curriculum, resources and learning tools that support diversity in learning styles, abilities, and needs

Support youth to engage with tutoring supports available

2) Group facilitation

Develop and maintain program structures, routines and expectations

Maintain the safety of the programming space

3) Support volunteer tutors

Guide and encourage volunteers in supporting youth

Work with the Volunteer Coordinator to develop, model and monitor the volunteer tutors’ role and techniques

Facilitate and support volunteers during programming and maintain regular communication with volunteers between programming sessions

Monitor student engagement and volunteer/student relationships and provide re-direction and support as needed to ensure student’s needs are being met.

4) Work as part of a collaborative team

Meet regularly with staff/team to strategize best practices

Report on students’ strengths, needs and challenges to appropriate staff members

Follow-up regarding any youth needs, disclosures or concerning behaviour.

Ongoing collaboration with Vancouver and Surrey pathways staff, as well as others external to Pathways

Academic and Job Experience Required:
B.A. or B.Ed. or relevant Bachelor’s degree (Social Work, Child and Youth Care, etc.) and/or a combination of relevant post-secondary education and/or a minimum of 2 years experience in youth-specific group facilitation and mentoring culturally diverse groups

Basic Requirements:
Criminal Record Check including the vulnerable sector

First Aid Certificate Level 1

Desired Requirements:
Experience working in programs supporting the educational success of youth

Experience and/or knowledge working within public school systems (gr 7 -12)

Extensive knowledge of group facilitation

Specific training and/or experience with youth with additional learning needs or new language learners

Experience in designing academic programming within a community-driven environment

Experience and connection with youth and families in Strathcona / DTES neighbourhood

Experience with conflict resolution and mediation

Experience working with volunteers, including training, supporting and developing resources

Knowledge of local community and social supports

Understanding of impacts of colonialism, racism and oppression

Practices are rooted in community and collaboration

Understanding of impacts and varying experiences of settlement journey
