Job Description

The mission of the New York City Police Department is to enhance the quality of life in New York City by working in partnership with the community to enforce the law, preserve peace, protect the people, reduce fear, and maintain order. The NYPD strives to foster a safe and fair city by incorporating Neighborhood Policing into all facets of Department operations, and solve the problems that create crime and disorder through an interdependent relationship between the people and its police, and by pioneering strategic innovation.

The Intelligence Bureau is seeking a qualified Intelligence Research Specialist to assist with Department operations.

By joining this team in this civilian opportunity, you will complement the NYPD’s counterterrorism efforts, providing the additional vision and resources needed to combat threats beyond those posed by traditional crime. You will be able to work at a detailed level on cases, using your unique skills to help detect terrorist activity. Ultimately, you will make a real difference in protecting New York City. Conducting terror investigations requires a broad range of general and specialized skills. Our Intelligence Research Specialists include subject matter experts in a broad array of fields, including international relations, history, law and public policy. Some are technical experts, and others possess expert knowledge focused on particular countries, religions, and languages, offering nuances understandings of the intersection of ideology, history and culture. As an Intelligence Research Specialist, Level I with NYPD, you will be a civilian member of an elite agency recognized worldwide for its leadership in counter-terrorism and law enforcement efforts.

Minimum Qual Requirements

Qualification Requirements (Assignment Level I Only)

1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college including or supplemented by 24 semester credits in forensic financial analysis, business, economics, finance, history, international studies, logistics, management, political science, psychology, public administration, sociology, statistics or a closely related field, and one year of satisfactory full-time professional experience working in criminal intelligence investigations, international research, intelligence database monitoring and analysis, computer aided mapping or geographic information systems technology or a closely related field; or

2. A master’s degree from an accredited college in one of the appropriate areas or closely related field as described in “1” above and one year of satisfactory full-time professional experience as described in “1” above.

A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college including or supplemented by 24 semester credits in forensic financial analysis, business, economics, finance, history, international studies, logistics, management, political science, psychology, public administration, sociology, statistics or a closely related field, and four years of satisfactory full-time professional experience working in criminal intelligence investigations, international research, intelligence database monitoring and analysis, computer aided mapping or geographic information systems technology or a closely related field; or

2. A master’s degree from an accredited college in one of the appropriate areas or closely related field as described in “1” above and two years of satisfactory fulltime professional experience as described in “1” above.

Preferred Skills

Currently possess SG clearance or ability to obtain. Written proficiency and/or fluency in languages such as Arabic, Farsi, Urdu, Pashto, German, Hebrew, Italian, Russian or Chinese. Preferred Educational background: A graduate degree in any of the following disciplines: Masters in Math/Physics, International Affairs/Strategic Studies? Islam and the Middle East/ Foreign Service/ Security Studies and Juris Doctor Degree. Preferred Experience: USG IC, Working with international aid agencies and nonprofits.

New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County.
