ARA312Y5Y Intermediate Arabic for Heritage Learners

Course description:
This course is for students who have basic background information in formal Arabic. To study this course, students should be able to write and speak simple sentences to express basic information in formal Arabic. The course builds on the skills that students have learned in ARA212Y5. By the end of this course, students should be able to use formal Arabic at an intermediate low level using ACTFL guidelines. Everyday language in the Egyptian and Levantine accents will be provided occasionally as supplementary materials for students’ information only. However, students’ skills will be assessed using formal Arabic only, which is the focus of this course.

Class schedule: Tusedays and Thursdays 9-11:00 (Online synchronous)

Sessional dates of appointment: September 1, 2021-April 30, 2022

Salary:
Sessional Lecturer I – $16,979.34 inclusive of vacation pay (1.0 FCE)

Sessional Lecturer I Long Term – $17,738.50 inclusive of vacation pay (1.0 FCE)

Sessional Lecturer II – $18,171.16 inclusive of vacation pay (1.0 FCE)

Sessional Lecturer III – $18,603.80 inclusive of vacation pay (1.0 FCE)

Please note that should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail.

Minimum qualifications: Applicants must have a completed a graduate level degree in the relevant area of the course. Demonstrated experience teaching university-level Arabic language courses and cultural studies. Native or near native Arabic language fluency is required.

Preferred qualifications:
Demonstrated excellence in teaching. Preference will be given those with experience teaching a similar on-line language course. Preference in hiring is given to qualified individuals advanced to the rank of Sessional Lecturer II and Sessional Lecturer III in accordance with Article 14:12.

Description of duties:
Preparation and delivery of course content (online synchronous); development, administration and marking of assignments, tests and exams; calculation and submission of grades; holding regular office hours; supervising TAs assigned to the course (if any).
