The Opportunity:
Working within our Counselling Services Department, the Domestic Violence Counsellor will provide support on a regional and remote basis to newcomer and racialized women experiencing violence in relationships. The Counsellor will work with both parents and children who have experienced or witnessed abuse by completing assessment to evaluate readiness for psycho-educational group support and providing 1:1 counselling supporting the emotional and psychological impact of the trauma. The counsellor should have a strong lens of supporting newcomer LGBTQ+ communities.

This position will support the following programs:
PEACE

Stopping the Violence

Roots of Safety

Responsibilities include:
Assist clients with service goals based on assessments;

Make referrals to other services as needed;

Provide individual counselling to the client and/or individual family members using basic counselling techniques and best practices;

Provide group based support for women and/or children as appropriate;

Submit monthly statistics and write program reports as required;

Attend team and staff meetings, and case review meetings as required;

Meet with the Program Manager for case consultation and review;

Work closely with other community agencies across the Province to promote collaboration and cooperation in delivery of service to self-identified immigrant women and/or children who are victims of abuse/violence;

Work cooperatively with the the Violence Prevention and Mental Health Substance Use team.

Mandatory Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in a related human/social service field;

Two years’ recent related experience, equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered;

Fluency in Arabic, Farsi, Punjabi, Spanish or Mandarin.

Qualified candidates will also posses:
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills;

Experience facilitating groups;

Skills, knowledge and sensitivity on issues related to violence against immigrant and refugee women and children;

Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively and independently;

Class 5 BC Driver’s License is an asset.

This position requires union membership. A Criminal Record Check is a requirement of employment.
